Film theory teacher and cinephile Paul Marino will be leading us through the documentary, Rodney Ascher’s Room 237 It is a fascinating 2012 documentary that explores the many theories, hidden meanings, and possible subtexts behind Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Told through the voices of five off-screen Kubrick scholars and devoted superfans, the film examines interpretations that range from thoughtful and symbolic, such as the idea that madness is a maze, to the wildly conspiratorial, including the theory that Kubrick helped fake the moon landing.

Like The Shining itself, Room 237 unfolds in chapters, inviting viewers to consider the film’s symbolism, imagery, and mysteries without declaring any one theory correct. Instead, Ascher allows the audience to decide what they believe, encouraging viewers to think for themselves — much like Kubrick’s masterpiece continues to do.

The screening will be presented by Paul Marino, a local film appreciation instructor, who will also share his own unique theory about the deeper meaning of The Shining.
