In this follow-up workshop, participants will expand on the fundamentals learned in Part 1 by adding layers of complexity to the filmmaking process. The focus will be on advanced coverage, performance direction, and technical refinement.
Objectives:
Deepen understanding of storytelling through shot selection (motivated camera movement, inserts, and reaction shots).
Explore performance direction, working with actors to enhance emotional beats and continuity.
Introduce lighting for mood: using simple setups to create atmosphere and consistency.
Practice slating, logging, and set protocol to streamline the shoot.
Rotate through advanced crew roles (script supervisor, gaffer, camera operator).
Conduct a group edit session to connect production decisions with the final cut.
Activities:
Script Enhancement & Pre-Production
Add one new dramatic or comedic beat to the original short scene.
Create a revised shot list that incorporates new coverage and camera movement.
On-Set Execution
Shoot the revised scene with attention to lighting, motivated framing, and stronger actor direction.
Assign advanced crew roles with clear responsibilities.
Post-Production Review
Rough cut the footage in-session (or review a pre-prepared edit).
Discuss how directing, cinematography, sound, and lighting choices shaped the outcome.
Takeaways: Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for how professional workflows elevate a simple scene. They’ll understand how technical and creative decisions made during production affect the final edit, preparing them for more ambitious projects.
