Lorraine Portman Interview

Lorraine Portman is an award winning Filmmaker, Playwright, and Screenwriter.  Portman has directed seven short films and a feature.

Portman’s plays have been produced in Massachusetts, Florida, Illinois, and New York.  Two are published.  “Small Animals” won the Denis Johnston Playwriting Award. Full length “Geek Girl & Cosmo Queen” won The Playwright's Theater of Denton New Play Competition. Portman has directed multiple well-reviewed theater productions.

Her stack of screenplays have been winning awards and placing in national and international competitions.  Bluecat recognized “Peace, Love, and Law Enforcement” with their Screenplay Live! Award in 2010. Lorraine was awarded the Paul Schrader Best Screenplay Award by The Cayman Island International Film Festival for her screenplay “The King’s Inn” in 2017. Feature length thriller “Attic Ashes” won First Place in Beaufort Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition, First Place Thriller in the Film Crash Screenplay Competition, First Place in Chicago Genre’s Screenplay Competition, First Place in Yosemite Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition, Third Place in Cayfilm’s Screenplay Competition, and many other awards. Black comedy “eDisharmony” won Best Screenplay in FLY Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition, Best Script in the Women’s Only Entertainment Film Festival, Best Feature Screenplay in Austin Revolution’s Screenplay Competition, Best Dark Comedy Screenplay in the Broad Humor Film Festival Screenplay Competition, Outstanding Comedy in the Sacramento International Film Festival Screenplay Competition and more. Science Fiction “Day of Reckoning” won Outstanding Screenplay in the Oil Valley Film Festival Screenplay Competition and has been a Finalist in many other competitions. 

Portman’s short film, “Falling South,” has been programmed in fifty one film festivals and has won fourteen awards to date.  Portman’s directing has been recognized with many Best Directing nominations and two wins.  The work of the cast, cinematographer, and editor has been recognized with awards and nominations.  “Falling South” has won two Best Short Film awards and has been an Audience Choice winner. 

Four minute short film “Endangered!!!” has so far played eleven festivals and won a couple awards. Previous short film, “Jordan Almonds,” played twenty one festivals and won four awards, including Best Family Issues Micro Short, a Director’s Choice Award, and Best Comedy Short.  

Her feature length film “Saving Sophie,” played twenty six film festivals and won nine awards, including one for Best Emerging Director, two Audience Choice awards, three Best Feature awards, and a Best Comedy award.

Newest short film “Sparky & Butch”, written for director/producer Kyle Kleinecke, continues to play film festivals and win awards. 

Portman taught Playwriting and Screenwriting for ten years at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida.  She holds a B.A. in Theater from Smith College and M.F.A. in Film from Florida State University. Portman also attended the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. 

            Portman has optioned several screenplays and has done work for hire in several genres. She has taught a Crash Course in Screenwriting for a number of film festivals and has been a panelist for many others, speaking on a range of topics, from screenwriting to indie filmmaking. 

Portman is currently writing a screenplay with James V. Hart.  Lorraine is a Screenplay Development Consultant for LA based Samaco Films.
